Mary Otoo's Fundraising Page for Unite For Sight

Progress: $3,470   Goal: $5,000
Message from Mary Otoo:

I looked in her eyes and realized she had cataracts; it was a popular condition at the clinic. Like most patients, she was scared but I told her, “rather than being scared, be curious about what you will see after the surgery”. She reached for my hand after I took off her patch the next day. With tears filling her eyes and shaking, she looked at me intently and said, “I could not see you yesterday, but today, I can. Thank you!”

Many such experiences at the Emmanuel Eye Center in Accra, Ghana, partly fueled my interest in becoming a Unite for Sight (UFS) Global Impact Fellow. It gave me great joy to see people look around as if it was their first time seeing and grateful for the gift of sight, something that many of us take for granted until we come close to losing it. I aspire to contribute to alleviating the challenges that impaired vision inflicts on lives through medicine, education, and community outreach.

As a UFS Fellow, I am raising 5,000 to provide free vision care for patients in the world’s poorest communities where 80% of blindness is preventable. The average cost for cataract surgery is $50 which means $5,000 will grant 100 patients the opportunity to see for the first time or see again.100% of your donation to this organization goes to providing vision-restoring surgeries and care to the impoverished. Any help is appreciated, and no amount will go unnoticed.

Unite for Sight (http://www.uniteforsight.org) is a nonprofit organization that supports eye-clinics worldwide by investing human and financial resources in efforts to eliminate patient barriers to eye care. The impact of UFS is evident and enormous. To date, the organization has provided eye care services to more than 2 million people worldwide, including more than 90,000 sight-restoring surgeries. The organization continues to reach out to people, educating and empowering them to take charge of their vision health. Ultimately, UFS contributes to improving the quality of lives for people by offsetting financial hardships to vision care in poor and vulnerable communities.

My interest and curiosity in ophthalmology has led me to explore and gain more insight in the field. Partnering with Unite for sight will expand my knowledge and understanding of ophthalmology. As a UFS Global Impact fellow, I will have the opportunity to give back to my community and develop international research skills. I will be very grateful for your support and contribution. Please do not hesitate to reach me at motoo3@uic.edu with any questions you may have.

Thank you in advance for aiding this cause

Best,
Mary Otoo
