Ha L. Tran's Fundraising Page for Unite For Sight

Progress: $1,800   Goal: $1,800
Message from Ha L. Tran:

Hello! Thank you for visiting my page. I've personally contacted you because I need your help. This upcoming summer, I'll be working with Unite For Sight in partnership with DukeEngage to help give vision--light--to hundreds of people. In Vietnam, we have this saying "Cho ánh sáng," meaning "the ability to give light." This is the goal this summer.

In June 2013, I will be traveling to Accra, Ghana for eight weeks to help eliminate preventable blindness. I'll be working in an eye clinic to screen for eye disease, implementing education programs, and assisting in surgery for children and adults. I will be traveling to to rural villages to provide eye care to those who otherwise would not have access to an eye doctor. Most often, the cost of going to get help is the biggest barrier to achieving eye health. With this organization, Unite for Sight dissolves this barrier by providing community-based screening programs in those rural villages, diagnosing and treating eye disease in the field, and transporting patients who require surgery back to the eye clinic. Once there, patients receive free surgery funded by Unite For Sight so that no patient remains blind due to lack of funds. While abroad, I will participate daily with the local ophthalmologists, local optometrists, and local ophthalmic nurses to eliminate patient barriers to care and to facilitate comprehensive year-round eye care for patients living in extreme poverty.

In addition, back on the Duke campus, I am working to establish the Unite For Sight mission as a DukeEngage Program. DukeEngage, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Duke Endowment, empowers undergraduate students to address critical human needs through immersive service. Normally, it's an eight-week summer set program that is funded by Duke University. Students go out into communities abroad in order to provide assistance to develop the community. However, I've decided to develop my own independent project through Duke Engage. I want to set up my own program here in Accra. If I can show the DukeEngage board members that this program is changing the lives of thousands of people, the goal is to be able to establish this permanent program at Duke. Ultimately, I hope that students coming up behind me in years to come are able to participate in this program as well.

Counting down days till Ghana, I'm busy working with Duke's Institutional Review Board to approve my research project. I've personally collected over 825 glasses to donate--it's been packed in suitcases and waiting in my room, ready to head to Africa. I have completed over 30 hours of training in preparation for the medical aspect of this trip, as well as an additional 60 hours of outside training through Unite For Sight and my global health courses at Duke.
